About Tortuguero Village
Tortuguero is a very secluded place.
The closest city is Cariari, which is located at 1 and a half hours on a boat trip plus 1 more hour driving, however, there are small supermarkets, souvenir shops, restaurants and bars in the village. There is also a police office and even an small airport that can receive small planes.
There is no ATM in Tortuguero, so we recommend that you take the necessary precautions and carry some cash in case it is necessary. Most of the places accepts cards.
Due to the remoteness and difficult access to the area, all the lodges are pretty basic. There are not services as air conditioning or fancy stuff in the rooms, but we supplement with smiles, delicious meals and excellent service the lack of luxury regularly found in hotels with easiest access.

About La Baula Lodge
La Baula Lodge is a basic and rustic lodge builded in the early 80's and located conveniently near the Tortuguero National Park in the Northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
The property is surrounded by forest and lush gardens filled with wildlife and located right in front of the Tortuguero Lagoon. From the balcony of your room you can admire three different spieces of monkeys (howler, spider and white faced monkeys), sloth, birds as the toucans, manakins and trogons and a wide variety of flowers and plants.
La Baula Lodge offers standard rooms with:
- 1 double + 1 single beds
- 2 double beds
All the rooms has private bathroom, hot water in the shower, ceiling or stand ventilator and the service of towels, bath soap and shampoo
For your convenience, there is also a nice pool area facing the lagoon and other services as Bar & restaurant, laundry service & tour desk.
What to do in Tortuguero
While in Tortuguero, you can enjoy of different activities in the water canals or the lagoons, as in the Tortuguero National Park trails. Also, you can do the walk to the Tortuguero Hill and admire the beautiful and stunning view to Tortuguero and San Francisco Villages, the Penitencia and Tortuguero Lagoons and the coast of the magnificent Caribbean Sea.
The area also offers fishing tours that can be done, from an interesting and educational tour in a canoe with an artisan fisherman, to a more confortable and relaxing fishing tour on a fishing boat with one of the famous fisherman from the area.
During the months of July and October, the green sea turtle nests on the beaches of the Tortuguero National Park. During this time, tours are organized during the night to observe the arrival, the nesting process and then the return of the turtles to the sea. This is a must-see event on your to-do list. Also in mid-August, the first hatchings of turtles begin to be observed on the beach, which is another incredible and wonderful event of nature that you should witness.
