First of all, you should go to the Gran Terminal del Caribe in San Jose, (known as La parada de Caribeños). If you tell the taxi driver, he will know where to drive you.
There are buses daily from San Jose to Cariari (at 6:30am – 9:00am – 10:30am – 13:00pm – 15:00pm – 16:30pm – 18:00pm – 19:00pm). We highly recommend to take the early buses, because the buses after the one at 10:30am will not make it on time to catch the bus to La Pavona (which is the place where you have to take the boat to Tortuguero) and you will have to spend the night in Cariari. In that case, Click here to see a recomendation on where to stay in Cariari.
Once in Cariari you should take the bus to La Pavona that goes daily at 6:00am – 11:00am and 15:00pm, then, in La Pavona, go to the Restaurant and buy the tickets to take the public boat to Tortuguero (7:30am – 12:30pm and 16:00pm
Once in Tortuguero Village, take a water taxi at the same place where the public boat drops you off, and ask him to take you to La Baula Lodge. We are just 3 minutes away from the village.
The water taxi charges $3°° per person.
Do not leave your luggage unattended while in the bus stations around Costa Rica, since it could be stolen.
