The Tortuguero National Park is located on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast, in the Province of Limón. The park was created on November 13th, 1975. The park features a conservation area that amasses 18,949 hectares of protected lands and 52,265 hectares of protected water zones. This park constitutes the most important nesting site for the Green Turtles in the Occidental Caribbean, other species such as the Leatherback Turtle, where we derive the name of our lodge, and the Carey Turtle are also present in this area. The lagoons and navigable canals make up the main parts of the park and are the natural habitats  for such species as crocodiles, caimans, manatees, turtles, crustaceans, and exotic living fossils such as the Tropical Gar among others; this National Park was created for the protection of the great variety of flora and fauna that can be found in the area and it is part of the Wetlands of International Importance under the RAMSAR Convention.

There are four different ways to get to Tortuguero
1- Lodge private transportation
We offer our own bus and boat transportation packages, which includes the boat trip through the canals, the highlight of any visit to Tortuguero.
This is probably the safest and easiest way to get to Tortuguero. Our minibuses are comfortables, with air conditioning and bilingual drivers. Plus you do not have to worry about driving and we will stop as many times as necessary for you to take pictures and admire the beautiful landscapes of Costa Rica.

2- Domestic Flights
There are two companies that we recomend. Please contact us for airfare rates
The flight to Tortuguero takes about 35 minutes and if you keep us informed about your flight schedule, there will be a boat waiting for you to take you to La Baula Lodge.

2- Public bus
The journey on public transportation is an interesting experience to learn more about the idiosyncrasies of Costa Rican citizens. There are buses daily from San Jose to Cariari (every hour starting at 6:30am) and then in Cariari take the bus to La Pavona (6:00am - 11:30am - 15:00pm), where you should take the public boat (7:30am - 12:30am and 16:30pm).

3- Your own car or rental car
You must drive from San José by taking the Route 32 heading toward Guapiles. You should then follow the signs on the road to Cariari - Palacios - Pavona - Rancho La suerte. Above you will find a map that will help you get there more easily.

The Rancho La Suerte is a safe place to leave your car (you need to pay $10ºº per day) and then take the public boat to Tortuguero. Be sure to tell the boatman to drop you at La Baula Lodge.
